Dear Diary,
Today is Tuesday, September 16, 2008, it’s a rainy day here is Denver, North Carolina; also known as the Lake Norman area. Just a week ago We had our male westie neutered and dewclaws removed so since then he has had to give-up his surfer dude (made in the USA ~ UpCountry) collar for the dreaded Buster Clic Collar made in Finland (also commonly known as the cone, upside down lampshade, or radar dish, you pick) so last night while in bed the collar came off, I left it off until I had to come to the office for phone duty. This is the longest I have been away from him since his surgery last week and I miss him and hope he is doing fine . . . . so he is on my mind. I am sure that our female westie Coco is looking after him while I am absent.

In thinking most of us pet owners share this certain love for our pets, a love that most people without pets will never know.

Teresa.. I knew from all your blogs that we must have something in common... well, I found it.  We love the same breed (almost) of dogs.  I have the cousin to the Westie.. the Cairn Terrier.  They are the BEST dogs in the world.  I would love to have another Westie...  They love to travel, they love every member of the family.  They wear their hearts on their sleeves.  I hope Scooter Boo gets better soon.  I dont know if it is worse for him or you?.  Scooter.. that was the nickname of my first Cairn Terrier..  Meghan Skye Scooter McGreggor.  Why did you have his toenails declawed?  ouch.

In a since I guess you are right. All my childhood life we had pets and with pets they bring a kind of glow to the the home. A friend of mine was more of a big dog owner, but know that he is raising his daughter they bought a little Dover-men  brown pincher. You should see how different their home is in a good way. His daughter loves Bam-Bam

Oh, Teresa, Scooter Boo is SOOO cute!  Poor baby with the 'cone of shame'!  My baby had that done also and he was visibly 'depressed' while he sported his new collar too!  Isn't is amazing how quickly our 4-legged buddies heal when they've had surgery, are sick or have been injured--and thankfully so--it's heartbreaking when they're 'down'!

Teresa, he looks like 1950's movie astronaut. Too cute! I'm sure he'll be back to 100% very soon.

Valerie: Okay, I need pictures! It's funny that you have a cairn terrier. Our female is going through this phase of showing her cairn roots. Lately around her mouth, front tips of her front paws, and parts of her bottom are turning the cairn brown look. She is almost 4. Scooter has always had whiter hair even though when he was a baby is skin coloring was really black in his ears, but since then have turned pink. Scooter is now 1.5 years.

Scooter didn't have any back dew claws but we had the front ones removed due to the possibility of catching on something and having problems later on.

He did well today without me. I was just concerned that the strip of gauze that is around this collar might get stuck on something or that he might work on it and somehow tighten it. You just never know what they might do.

Greg: Thanks for coming by! Having a pet now days has really become a luxury. If families can afford a pet I think it is a WONDERFUL addition to a family with children. Children can learn a lot by having a pet to help care for.

Debe: Life would be pretty boring without our 4-legged babies. Yes, they tend to bounce back quickly, although when Coco had her surgery she nested for three weeks. It was so pitiful..

Lara: Yep, he is already on the mend but I can't wait till he gets his stitches out next week. I warned the vet that they better have their best staff working that day, because it won't be easy...

Teresa.. I'll get you pictures.. and attach them here later this morning.  I'm in the process of getting my sons off to school.. and I have only 45 minutes to get on one the bus.. and he isn't even up yet.

By the way, the Cairns change color over the course of their lives. The first one I had was brown... by the time she past (age 14), she was black.

Rusty who I have now, was called Rusty, because he was obviously, Fire Red, when we got him... He is now a wheat color.. age, I hate to say this 14.  No, he is not doing well, put he is NOT in pain.

Chat more later.. have to go.

Oh my garish Valerie he looks soooo much like my westies.... HE IS TOO CUTE!! I don't know why but the pictures I have seen of the Cairn Terrier looked more like a yorkie hair wise. About how much does Rusty weigh? I guess you have had him since he was a puppy? Is this breed hard to find? Does he or the female before had/have any allergies, skin issues, etc?

If you haven't already you should post his picture on the Dog Lovers group blog. I bet there may be people out there that may have not scene a Cairn too. It's just a breed you don't hear much about...Thanks for sharing!!

Teresa, Yes, they are supposed to have coarse fur.  I used to get Rusty hand stripped instead of getting his fur cut, and it was coarse.  Then when I went through my divorce, I had no choice but to go to a groomer to get this done.  The hand stripping is a rarity to find in this area.  I used to take him to the Boston area to get this done.. 2 hours one way.

Rusty has been on a diet lately.. he now weights 21 pounds instead of the 31... yes, 31 pounds.. way tooo much for this breed.  He still has a few more pounds to go.

The first Cairn I got was through a private home that breds this dog.  There were only 6 in the litter and oh they were so cute.  That is where I go Meghan, my first Cairn.  Rusty was a whole different story.  After Meghan died, I wanted another Cairn so bad.  But they are hard to find.. Puppy mills have them, but I WON'T support those breeders.  I put out the word, and in 9 months, I got a call from woman wanting to know if I was still interested in a Cairn Terrier.. she had one.  I jumped on it like white on rice.  I found out later this woman took Rusty from a breeder... he didn't meet her expectations and she was going to drown him.  LONG STORY.  I think I might blog this... I want to get the word out that there are breeders that do this...

Anyway, I've go to go.. I've got a 11:30 appointment... oh, real quick.. yes, Rusty and Meghan both had skin allergies.  I'll explain more later... B4N.

Hi Teresa, Oh my, your Scooter is so adorable. I have been through the "halo" thing WAY too many times. It is never fun but thankfully we normally always take "sick" dogs to our insurance office with us. We have many clients come in looking for them! I love your story.. God bless,
