Hurricane Season

Several years ago I won a trip to Cancun, Mexico. The first night there a hurricane hit. Back then young and naïve we never thought of checking a hurricane tracker, heck maybe we didn't have them back then. Today I ran across one that I thought I would share:  http://www.wbtv.com/Global/category.asp?C=137835

Take it from someone that knows, experiencing a hurricane in a different country is not FUN. They didn't tell us, during orientation, what to do if a hurricane would come. We were literally on our own.

Be Safe!!

The U.S. National Whitewater Center ~ Charlotte, NC

Charlotte can add another diamond to the city's crown! How cool is it to have a U.S. National Whitewater Center in your own backyard? Well Charlotte has it and has had it since August 2006. Today my family and I took the time to enjoy it. A day at the U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) is truly an adventure. Located on the banks of the Catawba River in Charlotte, the USNWC is the world's largest artificial Whitewater River and an official U.S. Olympic Training Site. The center is locally owned and operated non-profit and is dedicated to promoting healthy, active, outdoor lifestyles.

 .

At a cost of $38 million, the center encompasses 307 acres and offers whitewater rafting and kayaking, flat water paddling, mountain biking and hiking trails, a climbing center and a ropes course, along with a 2,400 square-foot conference center (catering is available) and 300-seat River's Edge Bar & Grill - all overlooking the home rapids of the U.S. National Slalom Canoe/Kayak Team. The center also has an outfitter's store full of everything you would ever need to enjoy the center. Thursday nights is Subaru River Jam Concerts 27 nights of music and whitewater, May 1 thru October 30, offers rock, country, blues, funk, folk, pop-rock, honky-tonk, reggae, and the genres go on!

The newest addition to the center is a zip-line that will take you from one side of the center to the other side. Completion is expected next month.

The River's Edge Bar & Grill offers a variety of appetizers, soups & salads, sandwiches, desserts, drinks (including a large list of wine and beer). I enjoyed their pimento cheese burger which was really "huge" and "good". Our waitress told me that they even make their own pimento cheese.... The average cost of lunch including drink is around $10.00 per person.

If you haven't experienced the USNWC please take some time out and experience it. It's a great place to spend time with family and friends, a lot to see and do!!

Denver (LAKE NORMAN) ~ Oh! What Growth...

Prior to getting married my husband and I discussed where we were going to make our home; the year was 1984. We came to the conclusion that Denver (Lake Norman) would be the best area to begin. We began here and have stayed here and can't think of anywhere else we would like to be.

In the beginning though, I was really concerned that I wouldn't be able to adapt. Prior to this I lived in the "BIG" city Charlotte and loved it. Loved the closeness to everything from SouthPark to Harris Teeter, from movies to bowling alleys, from Carowinds to the coliseum and let's not forget Douglas International Airport. Everything at your fingertips!! And did I mention that I worked in Uptown Charlotte?

Denver in 1984 was so different than it is today. Denver only had three neighborhoods: Westport, Country Valley, and Forest Oaks. The closest large grocery store was the Food Lion in Huntersville. Hardies was our only fast food chain. The only bank was NCNB now known as Bank of America. The intersection at Highway 73 and Highway 16 was a stop sign and all corners were wooded. We had one vet, one dentist, one eye doctor, a few medical doctors, and one Denver Pharmacy.  We had no public sewer system everyone had septic systems. Our two fire departments (East Lincoln and Denver) were voluntary. We had one elementary school, one junior high (middle school), and one high school.

Today we have a vast amount of neighborhoods: Willow Farms, Maple Leaf, Rock Springs, Deer Track, West Bay, SailView, Austin Shores, Ashley Cove, Verdict Ridge, Cowans Ford, Prospect Hills, Forest Hills, Stillwater, Webbs Chapel Cove, Governors Island, Governors Landing, Cameron Woods, The Ranches at Beth Haven, Catawba Springs, Forest Ridge, etc., etc., and the list goes on and continues to grow.... We now have three Food Lions, one Harris Teeter, and a new super Wal-Mart to do our grocery shopping. We now have several banks in the area, most all are the major banks, all with the exception of Wachovia (there is a Wachovia ATM) though..  The intersection of Highway 73 and Highway 16 is known as Waterside Crossing. We now have three vets, several dentist, medical doctors, and pharmacies.  About ten years ago a public sewer system was put in place but as of now we are tapped out due to the rapid growth. The amount of schools in our area has grown. We now have four elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools.

If you or if you know of someone that is interested in moving to our area, please contact me. Having lived in this area for the past 24+ years I feel that I would be a real asset in your search for housing in the Denver (Lake Norman) area. I have a great relocation kit that I would like send you. If interested please go to: http://www.teresamharris.com , go to RELO KIT where you can order one free of charge!! Denver (LAKE NORMAN)~ Lincoln County Property Tax/Fire District Tax/Sewer Tax

This year was the year that Lincoln County did property revaluations. Yes, most people have seen a HUGE increase and few have seen little or none. Due to the increase Lincoln County Commissioners have set the new tax rate at .57 per $100 valuation; which is four cents less. Commissioners had hoped to set the rate at .50 per $100, but in May voters approved a $44 million school bond referendum and rejected a quarter cent sales tax increase to fund it.

Commissioners approved changes in the local fire district taxes, too. East Lincoln and Denver property owners should check with their insurance companies for possible rate reductions due to improved fire service ratings.

Even though East Lincoln Sewer District is currently tapped out people in this district will see a reduction in their tax rate to two cents per $100 valuation.
